Is it goo goo g'joob or coo coo cachoo? Another random debate

So yesterday I was at this picnic for my Dad's friends, calld the Bull Brothers picnic. Now they have a little band and I actually was part of their band. I emceed and I also played guitar by myself for a good couple of hours. Then I joined their band and became lead singer. Everyone was blown away and Terry was so funny because he would change the lyrics around and make up new ones. It was so Lennon-like. I said that John Lennon used to do that and Paul actually met John at a church fete where John's band the Quarrymen were playing and John was doing a song that he forgot the words to so he started using lyrics from other songs and making up his words as he went along. Paul was so impressed and thought it was really clever.
I thought that way about Terry even if it was hard to follow. They did only a few numbers:Gloria, (I can't get no)Satisfaction, and House of the Rising Sun.
All in all it was really fun and I got asked to come back next year and I'm adding more songs to that list and Beatle-fying them out! Lol.
Anyways, we were tyring to figure our more songs to play when we started talking about Beatles songs and "I am the Walrus" came up. That song is absolutely one of my favorites.
Then the debate started whether Lennon sang goo goo g'joob or coo coo cachoo? I said it was goo goo g'joob because those were the original lyrics off the Magical Myster Tour album. They argued with me and I finally looked it up and I was right BUT either form is accepted I guess because it's hard to understand what John's singing but the original form was goo goo g'joob.
Also while I was lookng I came across this list. It's "you know your obsessed with the Beatles when...." and most of it for me is sadly true. The only funny part is the goo goo g'joob thing and the coo coo'cachoo.

You know you're obsessed with the Beatles when:

*You want to get your hair cut, but cannot decide on which Beatle you want your hair to look like. So you get your hair cut 4 different ways to make things "fair".

*Instead of saying "Oh f*ck!" you say "Goo goo g'joob!"

*You threaten to kill anyone who says "Rinko"

*You can't remember anything you learned in class 5 minutes ago...but you can clearly recall the Beatles tour dates of 1962, 1963, and 1964

*If you and your friends are walking across a cross-walk, you take off your shoes and lead on the opposite foot

*You hate the people who "brought you Kidz Bop" for making a "Beatles Greatest Hits" CD

*You want to change your last name to McHaristarnon

*If someone asks who you are, you instinctively respond "I am the walrus"

*You made your own Sgt. Pepper's costume

*When someone asks for help, you immediately break out into song

*Everyone in school knows you as "the other Beatle..."

*You think the greatest composer of all time was George Harrison (or one of the other 3)

*Whenever you hear the song "When I'm Sixty-four" you begin to cry; John and George never made it to 64

*You think 40 is THE unlucky number

*"Come Together" taught you how to add simple numbers

*Your best gal-pals are Lucy, Anna, Sadie, Rita, Eleanor, Michelle, Sally, Prudence, Martha, Julia, etc.

*If your friends aren't named that; you rename them so they are

*You have seen every Beatles concert/TV interview...and you were born in 1987 (or sometime after the 60's and 70's)

*You have more than 13 Beatles CD's in your collection

*You want to kill Jesse McCarntey for sharing the same last name as Paul

*You slap anyone who says...or even thinks that Paul and Jesse are related

*If Paul is not referred to as "Sir Paul..." you flip out. He was knighted, after all

*You're quietly nodding along to all of this

*You can't tolerate people saying they're big fans and all they know is "Yellow Submarine"

*You take the time out of your day to make a list like this

* is your default icon or is on your loooong list of Beatles icons

*In everything you write/draw, say, or do...there is ALWAYS something Beatles related

*The cashier at the local music store asks "what's wrong?" when you don't buy Beatles stuff.

*You have pictures of them as kids saved onto your computer.

*You celebrate their birthdays

*You 'accidentally' slip lyrics from their songs into conversations

*You seriously tried getting tickets for the Magical Mystery Tour

*You nicknamed that one teacher "big blue meanie"

*the most philosophical thing you can say is "All the world is birthday cake,
so take a piece but not too much"

*You have named one of your pets "Mr. Kite"

*You can identify any song by the first chord

*You can give a short biography on any song at any given time (i.e play time, date recorded, location recorded, etc.)

*In school, you use as many Beatles references in your notes as humanly possible. That's the only way you'll be able to understand them

*You asked your teacher if you could abbreviate your notes to Beatles references

*If you get stuck on a math problem and the teacher helps you, the minute you see where you made a mistake you immediately blurt out one of your insane Beatles references

*You're in your school's Marching Band only because the uniforms look like the Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band costumes

*You were very angry/disappointed to see that there was no Beatles fan club in your school

*You make a journal entry about people who look like the Beatles, but might not know it

*You can't stand people who consider themselves fans but only know the songs on the "Beatles 1" album

*When you're at your bus stop and see the bus coming, you start to sing "Here Comes the Bus"

*You purposely look for people who look like The Beatles so you can round them up and teach them how to perform Beatles songs

*You successfully found all 4 look-a-likes

*You probably locked them up in your basement

*You try to buy your teacher's Beatles tie from them for your lunch money, a few pens, and the promise that you'll shut up with your references.

*You travel all the way to Pittsburgh just to get that tie (from the retailer, of course,) because you refused to order it offline since it "wouldn't be the same"

*Your username/screen name for anywhere either has the word "Beatles" or something related to the Beatles in it

*Remember the 4 look-a-likes? You forgot to feed them...

*You actually darted downstairs to your basement to check on them (there or not)

*You absolutely HATE it when people say it's "coo coo ca choo" instead of "goo goo g'joob"

*You find yourself comparing every band on earth to the Beatles

*You have seen "Yellow Submarine" and understood all the puns

*You tried sending a letter to Pepperland

*You're now stalking someone in another town because his name happens to be "John Lennon" or "George Harrison"

*You have cried because you were listening to "Imagine"

*On December 8th you're going or have gone to New York to show respect for someone who was quite possibly the biggest influence on society.

*Remember that letter to Pepperland? You got a reply. (woah!)

*You get headaches pondering what happened to Revoultions 2 through 8

*Whenever someone asks you if you believe in love at first sight, you instinctively respond with "Yes, I'm certain that it happens all the time"

*All you wear is Beatles shirts

*You have a tattoo of one or more of the Beatles

*You check everywhere you go for any new Beatles items (even the grocery store)

*You sign up for a class only because the teacher likes the Beatles.

*You photoshop yourself into pictures of the Beatles

*You flip out when a Beatles song starts playing in a public place.

*And you don't mind all the funny looks people give you as you openly dance and sing along.

*In fact, that just makes you go crazier!

*You've given people lectures about how "Lucy In The Sky With Diamonds" was inspired by a picture Julian Lennon made in school of his friend Lucy, and is NOT about LSD.

*You are excited because your doctor's name is Robert.

*No matter what it is or how much it costs, you ALWAYS buy whatever Beatles-related thing you come across. Or at least save up to get it.

*You "ruin" watching A Hard Day's Night by saying the lines along with the Beatles.

*Whenever one of your friends comes across anything related to The Beatles, you're the first person to pop into their head.

*Though nothing they tell you would be something new

*Whenever someone asks you how you are doing, you reply: "I feel good, in a special way" or "I feel fine."

*If someone asks you for your phone number you say, "You know my name, look up the number."

*You have daydreamed about finding a time machine and making one (or all hehe) of The Beatles fall in love with you.

*You have bought "The Grey Album" even though you despise rap/hip-hop.

*You only watch "Who's Line Is It Anyway?" because you've heard they once did a game where they could only talk in titles of Beatles' songs, and you're afraid you'll miss the rerun if you don't.

*You have seen/been in a Beatles Tribute Band.

*You've met someone who's related to one of The Beatles, and was happy because it's "close enough."

*You can't tell anyone "good morning" without adding "good morning! good morning-ah!" afterwards.

*You can pick out specific Beatles songs to match any mood you have.

Celebrity American Idol

So my uncle and I were having a conversation about American Idol if there were a celebrity version and who would be in it. Now the rules are simple-1) They can either be dead or alive 2)They cannot be a collective or a band 3)Can be members from a band 4)Can play a musical instrument but must be able to sing. 4)Must have made an overall contribution to musical history. 5)Can be of any genre/era/etc.
Our list was narrowed down to John Lennon, Paul McCartney, Neil Young, Elvis, the two girls from Abba, Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, Celine Dion, Tom petty, Janis Joplin, and George Harrison (I had to fight for this one, George is such a dark horse.)
Now I think that's a good list but in my personal list without my uncle they would be as follows: John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Elvis, Tom Petty, Roy Orbison, Buddy Holly, Judy Garland, Frank Sinatra, Janis Joplin, and Robert Plant.
Then we said that John and Paul would probably verse each other but would both lose to Elivs.
He also asked me to pick between John and Paul and I said George. Lol. I like to go to him with this question but I did come to a conclusion. I think I would say John just because of the song "Imagine" because it is so widely known and loved. Yeah Paul is great in his own right and has songs that are just as big as "Imagine" but that was my criteria. I think John and Paul would tie.
The other ones up for consideration for our "celebrity" American Idol were Joni Mitchell, Emmylou Harris, Steve Perry from Journey, Jim Morrison(My uncle said he was too out there), Neil Diamond(too Jewish-I actually had to laugh), Mick Jagger(too sexual-lol), Roger Daltrey(Not good enough to make it past the first round, ouch), Brian Wilson, Eric Clapton(more of a guitar god and not a singer-actually agreed),Ray Charles, and Stevie Wonder.
All in all, it was a weird conversation and I want to write into Fox to suggest a celebrity American Idol but I know that many of these people are already huge stars and really don't need that show.
We literally talked about it for 3 hours! It was quite the debate.

Music webistes

So I have a couple of music websites that I have checked out.
The first is the most recommended albums and music of ALL TIME. It's a pretty cool website that is broken up into albums by year and of course you can search for your favorite artists and songs per decade.
The link is: http://acclaimedmusic.net/
There is also a forum and question and answer section.
The second webiste that I wanted to share is www.nme.com.
It's the ultimate COOL list and this list is HUGE! It spans lots of era's/genre's/etc.
You can vote for your favorite artists on a scale of 1-10. The webstie also has a lot of other cool features.
So far on the cool list the top twenty includes: Keith moon, Bob Dylan, Neil Young, Jim Morrison, Iggy pop, Thom Yorke(Radiohead), Carl Barat, Kurt Cobain, Jimmy Page, Keith Richards (The Stones), Syd Barrett, George Harrison, Joe Strummer, Damon Albarn, Elvis Presley, Paul McCartney, Jimi Hendrix, Freddie Mercury (Queen), John Lennon, and finaly David Bowie.
Of course these numbers could change and I actually think Lennon should be number one but we'll see, the list so far looks good!
Finally the last website I like is Last FM. It's similar to Pandora and I like that you can download songs off of your playlist. You can listen to a lot of new artists and add those songs to your favorites.

Jonas Brothers the next Beatles?!

Here's an article that was posted in my Beatlepics. community and it made me personally want to throw up. I can't believe that the Jonas brothers would even be compared to the Beatles because to me they are WAY uncomparable. I also say give them a few more years to become better. Anyways, here's the article:
Source: http://www.timesoftheinternet.com/1167.html

We knew the Jonas Brothers were hot, but we had no idea that anyone out there regarded them as being on par with The Beatles, but we found one music expert who did just that. Ray Worley, owner of "Throwback Music" in Hatsfield, Maryland thinks the JoBros are superior to the Fab Four on a number of accounts.

"The Jonas Brothers beat the Beatles on 5 out of 6 criteria I use to judge bands"

"You gotta understand," said Worley. "I lived through the Beatles era and saw them perform live many times, so I think I've earned the right to speak on the subject."

Worley is a large man with an engaging smile. He really warms up to the subject of this comparison. In the 1960s, Worley attended over 20 Beatle's concerts, and has kept meticulous records that detail his experiences. More recent in his memory is the 20 Jonas Brothers concerts he's been to. For him, the Jonas Brothers are ahead of the Beatles in a number of important categories.

"First off, there are three Jonas Brothers and there were four Beatles. The Jonas Brothers are outmanned yet they still come out ahead," said Worley. "Keep in mind the Beatles were together 10 years but much of their success hinged on the mystique surrounding them. The Jonas Brothers are making it big in music in much different times."

Worley conceeds that the Jonas Brothers will probably not catch up to Beatles in number of records sold, but he thinks that's more a product of the times than a reflection on the group.

"There is no one alive right now who will come close to selling a billion records, but that's mainly because the record industry has changed. If you had a time machine and could put Nick, Joe, and Kevin back in time they would sell 2 billion records."

Worley says that the Beatles probably had the edge on songwriting skills, but they were way behind in charisma.

"If you have ever been to a JoBros show you would know what I mean," he said. "They electrify the crowd with their performance in an almost supernatural fashion. Now John Lennon and McCartney were good, but they just lacked that connection with their audience."

Worley says very people share his opinion, but that's largely because they're misinformed.

"People argue with me all the time," said Worley. "They say a 68 year old man shouldn't even be going to a Jonas Brother show. I fire right back at them that I will go where I want and that's to see the greatest band ever assembled, the Jonas Brothers. If they persist in giving me a hard time I kindly tell them to keep their opinions to themselves."

END of article
---

Now I have some questions of my own:
1) What exactly where that man's criteria (Worley) because it is never made clear in the article at all and I would think that would be an important part of the article.
2) I think this guy wants publicity for his record store and what isa 68 year old man doing at Jobro's concert? It's kinda creepy. Now a 68 year old man at a Beatles show...not so much.
3)How does he even have the credentials to decide who is bigger than whom?
4) Why are songwriting skills compared? There can only be one Lennon/McCartney as far as I'm concerned and lets not forget George here and the very rare but fun Ringo.
5)Okay so the Beatles had 4 members who each did specific things in the band and not only that, could play so many instruments. The Jonas Brothers can't do that and there are 3 MAIN Jobro's but I've seen some other guys in the backing band.
6) The charisima thing is bull shit because the Beatles had plenty of that because if they didn't, they would'nt have sold over a billion records! I think the thing is though is that it was hard for them to tour when girls were screaming and they couldn't hear but they never seemed to annoyed or phased by it to me. They controlled that crowd. Also go back to the earlier days before Beatlemania and you'll see what I'm talking about.
The Jonas Brothers phenomana can be compared to early beatlemania because it's a bit similiar. There are so many girls just screaming but I think the Jonas Brothers are sweet and do have some charisma.

Alright well, this article pissed me off a little bit because to me it's uncomparable and I know the Jonas Brothers must like the Beatles because they do have similiarities to them but as far as them being the next Beatles? I don't think it will happen, no one's ever come close and no one ever will.

Get Back! The cast of Beatlemania

So today on a whim, my mom and I decided to go to Meadowbrook to go see "Get Back! the cast of beatlemania.
"
Now it was my 3rd time going, the first time I was about 12 or 13 and don't remember too much except it catapulted my love for the Beatles. The 2nd time was at Arts, Beats, and Eats, when I was like 15 and I wore my John Lennon shirt and the John Lennon impersonator liked me and Ashley and I sat in the front row but it was a very short show.

Then there's the Disney tribute band that I saw about 4 times for their different sets and got my picture taken with them and that was fun but NOTHING compares with this.

My mom and I wore our Beatle t-shirts and turned in our $10 pavillion seat vouchers and got row b! They were excellent seats.
The first half of the show was actually pretty loud that we needed earplugs!
Then we saw a guy backstage that looked so familiar and it turns out that it was my brother's friend Steve who knew me and my mom of course as well.

He let us BACKSTAGE for the second half where we saw Sgt. Pepper's and onward. It was pretty awesome! I got to keep the set list and the layout as well as the input guide for the audio board.
It was cool to see the band from backstage and also to watch Steve run the audio board and what was great was that I understood it!
So now I really want to work at concerts and be like a roadie but still do the radio job at the same time.

The only thing is I wish I had picutres but I have photographic memory. Lol.

I lost my voice from singing and I danced! It was a blast and the band was much better than I anticipated.

They are the closet thing that I'll ever get to the real deal and their level of musicanship was amazing! I think I liked their George the best.

I've seen Paul McCartney and Ringo Starr and this was almost right up there with them.

I'm definatlely going back next year and I want to meet them and ask them how they got to even be in the band.

They sounded so much like the Beatles it was uncanny!
I thank the Beatle God's for my evening! Lol.

I would recommend this tribute band for everyone because I think they are great!
Here's their website link: http://www.getbackbeatlemania.com/gbframe3.html

Frank Zappa plays a bicycle

Sorry for the LONG wait. I've been so busy and I ran into these clips of a young Frank Zappa on a late-night show and he plays a bicycle. It's pretty amusing and it's so outlandish and weird that it's genious!

Sorry it's 4 videos!

THE WHO ARE TOURING!

I'm very excited about the Who touring. I thought that there was not going to be a tour for a while after all the stuff Pete Townshend said. He felt like he didn't want to tour w/ the old material and him and Roger were working on a new album w/ T Bone Burnett.
Two dates have only been given for the U.S. Tour.
The dates are: Nov. 8 Nokia theater, Los Angeles, CA. and Nov. 9 as well at the Nokia theater.
More dates and times haven't been announced but will and I will keep you posted.
This makes me really happy because every year my family goes to a concert and we haven't picked anyone yet so I'm hoping they come to the Palace in Detroit so we can go.
A small other reminder is that vh1 is honoring the Who at the rock honors.
That is July 17th 9/8 C. on vh1.
The Who will be performing as well as the Foo fighters, the flaming lips, Pearl Jam, Incubus, and Tenacious D. This will be interesting but I think it will be an awesome show!
Random fact about the Who:They are the loudest rock band.
Here's the link to the website all about it: http://www.vh1.com/shows/events/rock_honors/_2008/

The end of Aerosmith?

So being in broadcasting school, I frequently check news now and to my surprise ran over a story that put me in complete and utter shock.
My jaw dropped and I could only mutter a "What the f***!"
Steven Tyler got laid off from Aerosmith! I have no idea how they could just fire their lead singer like that. He had a great voice, good showmanship, and he knew how to control a crowd.
I don't know how they are going to replace him or with whom. They decided to keep more "energetic" members in the band which is a bunch of bull.
I have never seen Aerosmith live but my brother has and I actually really like them a lot. They were what was right about the 70's and even the 80's.
They were great in the 90's w/ those videos w/ Liv Tyler and Alicia Silverstone and I loved when they did Armageddeon.
I think their decline hit when they played the superbowl halftime show which I remember vividly was horrible because of Britney.
It's just weird that they would do such a thing after the release of the Aerosmith guitar hero game! HELLO!
Steven Tyler has been in the band for 38 years and got told 45 minutes before a gig that he was fired.
I understand that he just went to rehab but that's no reason to fire a guy.
I think that this is a HUGE mistake because Steven Tyler IS Aerosmith. I hate to break that but he's the only guy in the band's name that I can actually remember w/ the exception of Joe Perry.
I am hopeful that he will probably get asked to rejoin or if not he and Don Henley from the "Eagles" can get together. Poor Don just got replaced by a drum machine which might be worse.

Ringo Starr and Ben Harper

Here's an interview that I found that came up on Myspace when I checked in today. It's been a while since a post and I'm sorry about that. I started broadcasting school which takes up a ton of time but I promise to try to update this as much as possible.
Anyways, I love this interview! Ringo is so open and I love when he says, "I'm a drummer, not a plumber!" It just made me laugh and I also thought it was interesting that he had played on "Imagine" which I didn't know about but he also mentioned "Come Together" and "Rain" as the song where his playing seemed to change.
Enjoy this because it put a smile on my face!

Gonna write a little letter.

Okay, so I have decided that this is the year I will finally write to a lot of my favorite artists and others.
I found this great database. All you have to do is just search for whoever you want and it should come up.
This database has not only muscians(groups) but has actors/actresses, directors, singers,tv presenters, models, authors, and sports(athletes/teams.
Once I write my letters and stuff, I'll let you know their wherabouts and what happens. I would like to get some autographs as well.
Here's the link to the site:http://www.fanmail.biz/music_group/b/1.html

Happy Birthday Paul!

I'm excited tody because it is Sir Paul McCartney's birthday! Paul was born on this day and is 66 years YOUNG. I swear the man doesn't look a day over 40. He could pass for his 40's and even young 50's.
Paul is like the coolest person on the planet. He is well becomming my favorite Beatle as of late. First it was John and then it was George and now....it's Paul! I love them all though, even though I never went through a Ringo period but never say never.
Paul and I have something in common and that is we are both Gemini's. Even last year, his new album came out on my b-day. I had the pleasure of seeing this man a few years ago and I can't wait to go again. Recently, he did a show in Kiev which is in the Ukraine. I'm Ukrainian and I want to learn more about where my ancestors came from and my heritage. In a way, I think it's cool that he played for my people in a spot where they declared their independence. I thought it was sweet that he still played his show even under bad weather conditions battling storms.
He also is a wonderful guy because he's so funny and warm with his humor. He also gives to charities (no landmines) and he's all about not eating meat and being vegan. That's not my thing but I think it's cool that he does that stuff.
I hope that he had a fun day w/ his family and probably his new girlfriend (supposedly), Nancy Cheville.
I think Paul really got me to be a bigger fan because I loved him in the Beatles but he was so awesome with his solo career. Wings is a favorite band of mine! There used to be a joke in the 70's about what was the band Paul was in before wings.
I'm not going to make any playlist but I highly recommend starting out with either "Ram" which was Paul's solo album after he left the Beatles or get "Wingspan hits and history."
Cheers! HAPPY BRITHDAY PAUL!

Cheesy song but I love it! "Silly love songs."

This is one of my favorite Wings songs, if not number one! This music video is actually from the "McCartney years" dvd set and I highly recommend getting it. It has tons of great footage and all of Paul's music videos. This man is a genious. I know he still has years of rocking ahead of him!
This is my gift to Paul since he loved Elvis so much and they once said that the Beatles wouldn't exist if not for Elvis. Here Elvis sings "Yesterday" at a rehearsal and I think that is Paul's most well-known song and it's the most covered.

New artist Adele

I got up this morning extra early since I had orientation at my broadcasting school. There was nothing on as usual since it was before 9 so I turned on vh1 and started watching some music video's.
I really like this new artist from the UK named Adele. She's got an old-school soul sound but it's a nice mix of smokey blues and jazz. She said that she was influenced very much by Etta James and Etta Fitzgerelad. You can definately hear those influences and it was like that type of music but for our generation Y.
The song is called "Chasing Pavement." She said that she got dumped by a stupid loser boyfriend and was all dramatic and ran down the street and was just chasing the ground in front of her.
I thought the music video was a cool concept and if you like Amy Winehouse and Duffy, then you'll really like Adele!

Just a bit of music news.

So apparently Led Zeppelin is NOT getting back together for like the millonth time. I remember being so hyped about the Ahmet Eretegan tribute at Wembley stadium way back in December. I recently became a pretty huge fan of the band and yet this rumor keeps going around that they are getting back together. My favorite one had them reuniting in Canda! Like why the hell would Led Zeppelin be doing in Canda anyways? RANDOM!
Basically John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page say that a tour at this point is 'inevitable.' I kinda liked their one-off show deal and anyways it's pretty hard to do this because Robert Plant is currently on tour w/ Allison Krauss for their album "Raising sand."
I guess there goest that rumor!
The closet I saw Led Zeppelin was at a lazer show and this stoner(I'm pretty sure he probably smoked some weed before the show) keep yelling behind me, 'YEAH JIMMY!'
It was quite amusing and the animations were so terrible on 'Stairway' that the stairs looked like an escalotor. It was still fun but I was mad that they didn't even play 'kashmir' which according to Plant, was Led's best song and I agree! I hate 'Stairway' so much I like it. It gets old after a while and it's weird like folk song. It's only fun to do the subliminal message deal which is quite creepy.

Since I'm a song and dance girl....

I just had to post this! Tonight I watched the "Tonys" and I really do love musical theatre, I grew up with it all my life.
Well my friends, now I've seen everything. As I was searching for information about 'James McCartney' on youtube, I ran across an interesting video. The search result was 'James Paul McCartney." I totally forgot that Paul's first name was James and they only called him Paul because HIS fathers name was James as well but I believe he was called Jim.
Anyways, I found this lost concert from 1973. It's kind of a scary song but it made me giggle and I couldn't help but smile. The song is called "Gotta sing, Gotta dance."

There are like SO many things wrong with this video including Paul's 'pornstache' mustache! I really don't understand the part man, part woman deal but it does look kinda cool and the tapping was great! I loved Paul's shoes. Lol. The thing that cracked me up was the giant leg in the background! It reminded me so much of the lamp from "A Christmas Story."
I hope Paul doesn't do broadway because it would end up like this. Lol.

Happy Father's Day!

I know I'm a little late posting this because it's well past midnight by now. Oh well. I got a great idea for a post though. Since the radio station we have here, 104.3 the oldies station did a father's day song countdown, I got inspiration from that. I have posted a playlist with songs about fathers, etc. but I also did something cool as well.
I have decided to do the good ole' method of using a famous father and talking about their kid who followed in their footsteps musically. It definately reminds me of MTV's show, "Rock the craddle," which was so bad it was good. So without further adieu, my little playlist.
Playlist of Father's day songs:
1)Father and son-Cat Stevens. Recently just got into Cat. He's such a hippie.
2)Beautiful boy-John Lennon wrote this for his son Sean.
3)Goodnight-A Beatles song off the white album written by John as a lullaby type song for Julian but Ringo sings this.
4)Hey Jude-Paul wrote this for Julian Lennon and cared for that child as his own. I think it was very sweet of him and Julian's parents were going through a tough divorce and Paul wanted to kinda reach out and say that it was okay.
5)Cats in the cradle-It's a song by Harry Chapin and was written by Chapin's wife as a poem at the time. He came up with the melody and the rest is history. Although this song is indeed sad, it's message is to always be there for your kids because life is too short and when you have time, they won't.
6)Father and Daughter-Paul Simon. Very cute song!
7)Dance with my father-By the late Luther Vandross. Very touching song.
8)Papa can you hear me?-I know it's cheesy but Babs sings this one so well. It's from the moive "Yentyl." Go rent it!
9)In my life-The Beatles yet again. This one could pertain to anyone that you want it to. I love songs like that!
10)Song for my father-Horace Silver-Jazz classic from 1964. It also inspired the bass line for Steely Dan's "Rikki don't lose that number."

Onto part two:
1)Crosby Loggins:Won 'rock the cradle' and is the son of kenny loggins who was a soundtrack king w/ his partner messina. I just watched part of "Caddyshack" today and one of their songs was in it. Anyways, Crosby does a good job of this cover of "Long road to ruin" by the Foo fighters.

2)Sean Lennon:As the son of John and Yoko (how weird it must be), Sean had to prove that he was a talent. He made an album around 1998 called "Into the sun" but his album last year "Friendly fire" was excellent. He has a similar voice like John's and he mixes rock and orchestral stuff very well. It's like Pink Floyd mixed in with the Beatles to me and it's all unique. Here he's doing "Deadmeat," a haunting song off the album that is my favorite!

I also loved this aucoustic version and also the song "On again and off again" is included.

3)Dhani Harrison:Son of George Harrison and what I like to call the 'mini-George' for he looks SO much like his dad. Dhani played at the tribute concert for his dad 'The concert for George' and also helped finish up George's last album w/ Jeff Lyne 'Brainwahsed.' Dhani is in a band called 'Thenewno2.' They are an electronic based band but I really dig their sound.

4)Julian Lennon:Yes the OTHER Lennon. Jules got big around the 80's and he has a couple of good albums, "Valotte" and "Photograph smile."

5)Jakob Dylan:Bob's son. He was part of the 'Wallflowers' and has a new album coming out soon! I really loved this live cut from the house of blues in 05!You should also check out Jakob and Dhani's version of John Lennon's "Gimme some truth." It's like the Harrison-Dylan sessions all over again!

6)Dweezil Zappa-Frank Zappa fans know him from 'Zappa plays Zappa.' I have yet to go but I want to. I loved Frank and all his weirdness! My brother once told me that Frank really loved music and made over 30 albums. Craziness. Moon unit sings on this one! SO EIGHTIES!

7)Last but not least who can forget Ringo's son Zak Starkey! Zak has played w/ his dad at his All-Starr shows, for the Who, and is currently in Oasis.

That's the list I came up with!
ENJOY! It seems like we are in GREAT shape for the 2nd generation. The only one who didn't make the list was Jame's McCartney, Paul McCartney's son. Supposedly he's working on his 1st album with his dad. We'll see how it is when it comes out.

More Liverpool Capital of culture stuff

All I found was Ringo doing his drum solo for Abbey Road way back in January.

Here Ringo sings "Liverpool 8." Funny thing, I had no idea that there was a person in the audience with a light stick and I was like, "Why is Ringo waving a light saber?"

Here's Paul doing his soundcheck for the Liverpool sound concert.

Another sound check w/ Paul taking us backstage and naming some names.I love him with the crew, awkwardly dancing. Lol.

Paul McCartney at Liverpool Sound Concert

This post is late due to the fact that here in the Midwest, we lost power. Luckily our power was out for only a few hours BUT our cable and internet was out for about two days (Thanks Comcast). I'm delayed in posting this and I am giving you this gift.
Paul McCartney performed in his native Liverpool a few weeks ago June 1st. He played a homecomming concert at Amfield Stadium in front of 36,000 fans. Liverpool just happens to be the 2008 European Capitol of Culture. Ringo was also said to play and many speculated a possible Beatles reunion but that did not happen. The whole McCartney clan seemed to be in additance as well as Yoko Ono and Olivia Harrison. Paul's set list was pretty good for the concert and he threw in some 'newer' tunes that he hasn't done as well as John's "Give peace a chance" which was kinda cool and unexpected and also included McCartney doing "A day in the life."
Playing on a few songs with McCartney was also Foo-fighter Dave Grohl who played guitar on "Band on the run" and then switched to drums for "Back in the USSR" and "I saw her standing there."
Stella also held her fashion show at LIPA.
The show was streamed on BBC radio and I've included the link here if you want to try to listen to it BUT you have to go ahead like 20 hrs.
Link:http://www.bbc.co.uk/liverpool/content/articles/2008/05/22/macca_live_on_bbc_feature.shtml
On to the video's that I found on Youtube:

"Hippy Hippy Shake"

"Something." Paul of course plays the ukelele that George gave him. Olivia's in the crowd and I really love this song. I teared up a bit.

"My love." This one was for the late Linda McCartney who died in 1998 from breast cancer. Paul get's a little chocked up during this but it's just beautiful.

"A day in the life/Give peace a chance." I have never heard "A day in the life" live before EVER so this was pretty darn amazing. They had all the parts too. The funny bit was that Paul got John's lyrics correct but messed up his own! I laughed out loud. Then the band went into "Give peace a Chance" which was a great sing along w/ Yoko and Olivia joining in too! I was singing along at home. LOVED IT!

Dave Grohl on drums during "Back in the USSR."

Dave playing guitar on "Band on the run."

Here's "Hey Jude" thrown in here for good measure.

Dave on drums again for "I saw her standing there." This one ROCKED! Rusty's solo was electrifying and Wix's keyboad playing was awesome. Paul also played his iconic Hofner bass on this one. EXCELLENT SHOW AND CLOSER!
Man that was one HELL of a concert and McCartney doesn't sound any different than when he was in the Beatles. I can't believe he's turning 66 next week! He sounds terrific, better than when I saw him in 05'. He hasn't aged a bit, I swear. YEAY LIVERPOOL!

Beatles day!

Apparently in the UK since Liverpool is the capitol of culture this year, July 10th is Beatles day. July 10th, 1964 was when the Beatles came back home from America where Beatlemania was started and were greeted by thousands of screaming fans back home at the airport. That same night they went to a recepetion for their first feature film, "A Hard Day's Night."
This is the FIRST ever Beatles day and reading all they have planned, I'm jealous. I feel like why does this have to happen just in Liverpool? I feel that we need to have an International Beatles day. I know I'll be celebrating July 10th. The funny thing is is that they made mop top wigs!
On July 10th, they want to hear everyone's Beatle stories and they are raising money for charities as well.
They have SO many events happening and I think that this is a great idea to show how a band could have such an impact on the world. It's extradorinary.
Liverpool hopes to make Beatle day a landmark day on calendars and they want to re-create Beatlemania.

Paul McCartney wins awards. YEAY!

It seems Sir Paul has been busy these days by doing what else but..winning awards!
Now Paul already has gotten a knighthood, grammy's, lifetime acheivement awards (that make him sound dead), and a membership into the hall of fame twice so what else does this man need?
An honorary doctorate of course! Paul received his honororary doctorate from Yale University in music.
Yale believes that Paul "awakened a generation, giving a fresh sound to rock n' roll and rhythm and blues."
In his speech, Yale president Richard Levin said, "Here, there, and everywhere, you have pushed the boundaries of the familiar to create new classics. We admire your musical genius and your generous support of worthy causes."
Well said! It is true that McCartney said that if he hadn't been in the Beatles he wouldv'e like to have been a teacher. After all, he did start Liverpool Institute of the Performing Arts (LIPA) on the grounds of his and George's old school AND he occasionally teacehs there! I guess we should start calling him Dr. McCartney, eh?

ALSO...Paul won the sexiest smile award! Here he shows off his skills:

Here Paul demonstrates on how to keep those pearly whites of his clean.

HOT!

Congratulations Red Wings!

So the Red Wings are the winner of the 2008 Stanley cup finals and seeing as I live in Michigan and close to Detroit, I was pretty excited that we won. I missed the parade but the game was excellent. I think my favorite player and the one who got the mvp anyways was Zetterberg. I felt like Pittsburgh had a ton of heart and they never gave up. I so wanted them to win on my birthday though. If it would've gone into overtime and past midnight, Detroit woul'dve won the cup on my birthday.
So what do the Red Wings have to do with this post? Well, another "Wing" wants to say congratulations!

So this was a bad pun but Paul has a Detroit connection. The guitar in the picture is Paul's Epiphone Texan Acoustic from 1964. He played this guitar when the Beatles performed in America for the first time on the Ed Sullivan Show. It also has a few tie-in's to me! My mother saw the Beatles when she was 13 years old at the Olympia Stadium in Detroit in 1964. Now Paul says that he got the Red Wings sticker given to him by a fan when he played Detroit in 1976 at Olympia Stadium which used to be where the Red Wings played before they moved to the Joe Lois. Apparently since that concert was in May, the season was almost over so McCartney and his band came out with hockey sticks at one point instead of instruments. Obviously he was in Wings at the time which is why this all makes sense.
Also, I got to see Paul in concert for the US tour in 2005 and he played this guitar during "Yesterday" and he still had the sticker on it.
How cool to have a little of Detroit history!

Happy Birthday Sgt. Pepper!

It was 41 years ago that Sgt. pepper was released today in 1967. This is a landmark album that changed the face of rock n' roll forever and has been named the #1 album of all time by Rolling Stone magazine.
"Sgt. Pepper" was one of the first concept albums and used many new studio techniques and orchestral instruments. Paul McCartney said that the Beatles wanted to try to be a different band then they had been and Sgt. Pepper's was the result. This album changed the world and was controversial at the same time due to the time that it was public knowlege that the Beatles were under the influence of drugs and the press even speculated that "Lucy in the sky with diamonds" was a reference to LSD. It was really about how John Lennon's son Julian drew a school mate, Lucy, and said it was 'Lucy in the sky w/ diamonds.' John liked the sound of that and wrote about it. Now, I don't know if this was ever intentional or not, John says that it wasn't but I believe it was subconcious. This album provides Ringo with a lead vocal and one of his signature songs even today, "With a little help from my friends."
George Harrison gets a solo song, the Eastern Indian-influenced "Within you, without you." It's an amazing song and George so perfectly meshes the generes of pyschedelia and western music.
John's "The benefit of Mister Kite" is a fun, whimiscal song that the Beatle got the inspiration to write after seeing a poster of a 'Mr. Kite" who ran a circus show.
Paul's "When I'm sixty-four" also remains a staple and is just a fun, happy go lucky song about growing older with the one you love and hoping that things will still be the same."
A final breakout song is "A day in the life." It's essentially two songs put together as one. Paul wrote one part, while John wrote the other. It is about the death of a close friend of theirs who got in a motorcycle accident as well as news stories about too many potholes(4,000) in a road near the Blackburn, Lanchashire. There is also an orchestra 'freak out' which meant that the orchestra was supposed to simulatneoulsy keep playing the highest notes that their instruments could play.
The song also includes a silent whistle that only dogs can hear, spliced studio chatter making the listener think that something went horribly wrong with the record, and the longest piano part played (g note) in which it took all 4 of them and George Martin playing the note at the same time to get it to hold out that long. Another fun fact about the song is that you can hear Beatles roadie Mal Evans keeping time by counting out the beats within the begining of the song.
Apart from being a great album, Sgt. Pepper was going to go on tour like the Elvis car but it never happened. I think it could've been very successful and done well.
"Sgt. Pepper" was also so big because it provided for the most 'Paul is dead' clues within the songs and album.
So here's to you Sgt. Pepper, an album that continues to endure and inspire!

Wonderful Making-of documentary!

RIP Bo Diddley

It is with sadness that I'm announcing the death of Bo Diddley on this blog. Bo Diddley was a leading blues rock pioneer. He passed away today (Monday, June 2nd) at the age of 79 from heart failure.
Bo Diddley was credited for creating the "Bo Diddley beat," a distinctive beat that helped form rock n' roll and became synomous with him and can be seen and heard even to this day.
Bo Diddley was also known for playing his signature rectungalur shaped guitar, a guitar that I actually had the pleasure of seeing last year at Henry Ford Museuam's exhibit, "rock stars cars and guitars."
Bo Didley's biggest single is his self-titled 1955 classic "Bo Diddley."
The below video is my little tribute to a man with great talent.
Also for recommended Bo Diddley downloads:
1)Bo Diddley
2)Roadrunner
3)Willie and the hand jive
4)Hey good looking
5)Mumbling guitar (This one sounds REALLY cool!

Really cool video from around the later sixties. Bo plays his signature guitar and dances as well!

She and him

I, Julia, will admit to something. After being agaisnt Indie music, I started to like it when I saw "Juno" and got the soundtrack. Thus, my love for indie continued to grow after that. I'm still a newbie when it comes to this genere but I will admit that I like it!
A new band that I'm really enjoying is called "She and him." "She and him" is comprised of M. Ward and actress Zooey Deschanel. Now, zooey's no stranger to singing. She sang for us in "Elf" and was very charming doing so. She still is charming us!
M. Ward was Zooey's musician neighbor and they both share a love of older music. Their cd, entitled "She and him:volume one" explores that old sixities soul sound but reinvents it with modern sounds. My itunes classifies it as 'baroque pop.' The cd starts off with Zooey's beautiful booming voice singing "Sentimental heart," a song about the good times and memories that she's had. I can hear influences of the Beatles within the string section and it almost sounds like a velvet underground song. It's an artsy song that draws you in and peaks your interest to want to listen to the rest of the cd. The next few songs sound the same until we get to "Change is hard." It has country and western folk roots and Zooey sounds like June Carter mixed in with Dusty Springfield. It's more a retrospective song. After this song, we move on to a favorite song of mine called "I saw your face today." It's a jazzy, uplifting song that Zooey sings with perfect blues tone! The next song, "Take it back" is very similar. Then we move directly into the sixties girl group sounding "I was made for you." This is another standout song to me that's just brillant and you just want to sing along and dance with it.
The rest of the cd is pretty good and there is a GREAT cover of "Swing low sweet Chariot." It's a bit call and response with it's delta-blues feel to it. I could see the share croppers or those that worked on the fields in the south, mainly the blacks, singing this, for they were the real pioneers that started rock within the blues sound. It's mostly acapella with a haunting, simple guitar faintly heard within the background.
I think the most exciting part for me was that there were 2 Beatles covers on this cd, "You've really got a hold on me" and "I should've known better." I thought both were brillant but I did like "You've really got a hold on me" a bit better. It was very bluesy/jazzy and it's a duet as well. This is one of the only instances were M. Ward is ever heard singing in the whole cd. It has a vulnerable spirt to human love, like almost obsessing about someone so much it hurts but you can't leave them because you can't break free of them and don't know what you'd do without them.
Now "I should've known better" was a little cheesy because it had hawaiin slide guitar and it just sounded like bad elevator music or something you'd listen to while sipping pina colada's by the pool side with the cabana boy in a bad hawaiin shirt. Needless to say, Zooey's vocals are really well and yet again, another duet. It just sounded a little bit out of place on the cd, I wish they would've left it like it is in the Beatles version. Honestly, the song makes me think of like "Spongebob Squarepants" and I don't think that's what they were aiming for.
All in all, it's a brillant cd that I can't stop listening to and singing along to. Go check it out! I really hope that they make a volume 2 because I really loved this one and it shows that Zooey can not only be an actress but a singer who's for 'real' unlike Scarlett Johanson, Miley Cyrus, or Lindsey Lohan. I also think her voice is very unique which is great because it's like when you hear artists like that with a distinctive voice, you know who they are!
Here's the link to their myspace page if you want it:
http://www.myspace.com/sheandhim

*Edit*=I orignally said that "You've really got a hold on me" was a Beatles cover. It actually is not! It's a cover of Smokey Robinson and the Miracles. They were the original writers of the song and the Beatles did a cover of THEIR version. Sorry for the confusion and bad research! I had no idea.

George Harrison on Muchmusic.

I found this video on Youtube and had never seen it before. This was done after the success of "Cloud Nine" which is one of my favorite Harrison albums.
I like George's honesty in this video and it's weird because he talks about the Rock n' Roll induction ceremony from 88'. Now it's become well-established and it's a place that you MUST go take a trip to if you are a music fan.
I think George is funny in this video. My favorite part is when the interviewer asks him about "Give my regards to Broad Street." He saw it and liked it and remebered the "Ballroom dancing" scene. I love that movie as cheesy as it is. The funny part though is when the interviewer asks George what he thought of the 'new' versions of some older Beatle songs in the movie. He said that he didn't realize they were 'new' or notice any difference. That made me bust out laughing and I agree with George, there wasn't much of a difference. They seemed more soft rock but they were still the same.
Also, George, just to let you know that Paul DIDN'T run out of his own songs and has made more albums since. I was surprised to hear that he would even want to touch John's songs. John's songs are perfect the way that they are.
Ah well, I thought this interview was good and I had never seen it before.

I'm so happy that my DAVID won!

In the battle of the David's on "American Idol," David Cook won!
I had been rooting for David all-season long since he just seemed so down to earth and a true rocker. The finale of the show last night was so good! My favorite moments were when Brooke White sang with Grahamn Nash, David Cook sang with ZZ Top, and of course who can forget BIRDMAN!
I loved that guy so much on the bad auditions show. He was the best. It was great to see some of the other idols who didn't quite make it to the end meaning Carly, Brooke, and Michael Johns who got totally jipped this season.
I honestly didn't know if David Cook was going to win because David Archuleta did so well, he really peaked and was at his best. Simon also said that it was "a knock-out." I don't know why but Archuletta bothered me all season. I felt like he was just too sweet for the music biz even though he had a lot of talent. I see him doing something for Disney.
Now Cook, I loved him so much and I thought he had so much originality and talent. I was shocked though that Cook beat out Archuleta because I thought for sure Archuleta was going to win due to how many fans he had. It was pretty close though, 44 to 56 million votes. I did like that Simon said it wasn't so clear cut as it seemed and he would be happy if either David won. I felt that way too but I still wanted my David to win. I knew even if he didn't, he would still be a big star, like Daughtry. He got voted off quite early a few seasons ago. I said that I hadn't been this nervous since Clay vs. Ruben, which was really the last season I watched until this year. I think that it was the best year EVER and I did like the fact that they got to play instruments. It really added to the overall show.
The worst thing this year was the Beatles week. Ewww. Then they did the second Beatles week, double ewww.
I only liked about four performances from that show. Brooke's "Let it be," David Cook's "Daytripper," and both of Michael Johns songs "A day in the life" and "Across the Universe."
I'm not even going to get into Krisy lee Cook's versions of "Eight days a week" and "You've got hide your love away." In a word, horrible. Oh yeah, I also liked David Cook's "Eleanor Rigby" but I thought that it was too similar to Godsmack's version and I wanted to hear something a bit different.
All in all, I think the right David won and he was so cute too! My boyfriend was so funny though, he said, "I'm glad that the hair man didn't win."
Me too Chris, me too. He was refering to Jason with the dreads. Jason was good for like songs he knew and he managed to screw up and forget the words to Bob Dylan AND Eric Clapton in one night. That's a record that's not even funny.

Online music radio

Hello! Okay, so I'm excited that this is my first post EVER. There should be like celebrations in the streets. It took me a few days to get a post up because somehow my blog was locked due to how blogger thought I was a spam blog. Nope, not this cute stuff.
Lately, I have become obsessed with an online radio station. If any music junkies like me are getting sick or bored of their same old music, try pandora!
Just go to pandora.com and sign up. Once you become a member, you can put in your favorite artist and it'll make a station out of that artists and similar artists that sound like them. My first station, of course, was Beatles radio. It gave me such artists as Paul McCartney, John Lennon, Queen, Cream, and the Doors. I also made stations for the Doors, Frank Zappa, Bob Dylan, Led Zeppelin, and the Who.
The other way to add stations is to go looking through the different generes. I picked classic rock, electric blues, and indie/alt. My FAVORITE station, however, is one that I share with my brother Matt. It's a rock n' roll station that plays all of this obscure music from like the 60's and stuff. There's lots of Velvet Underground. When you share a station, you can take it over as your own or keep it shared, which I did. It's cool because my brother picked some of the music that plays.
When you create any station, you can vote if you like it and it'll play that artist and similiar artists to that. If you don't like it, it won't play that SONG again.
Now it's terrible because I can't stop listening to it and my musical tastes are becoming more expansive than they were.
Go check it out at www.pandora.com
It's so much fun!
